At $3 million, new award gives medical researchers a dose of celebrity

Eleven scientists, most of them American, were scheduled to be named on Wednesday as the first winners of the world’s richest academic prize for medicine and biology — $3 million each, more than twice the amountof the Nobel Prize. Eric Lander, HMS professor of systems biology, is one of the recipients, as is Lew Cantley, founding member of the HMS department of systems biology, recently named director of the Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medical College and New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

The authors reflect on the days surrounding the tragic Rhode Island Station Nightclub Fire and the ten years since that time and recently published a study examining the physical and emotional trauma of more than 100 survivors of the incident. Jeffrey C. Schneider is an HMS assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Colleen M. Ryan is an HMS associate professor of surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.
