F.D.A. plans looser rules on approving Alzheimers drugs

The Food and Drug Administration plans to loosen the rules for approving new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. A study by Reisa Sperling, HMS professor of neurology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, is cited.

AIDS centers new labs debut

The Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard unveiled its new $30 million laboratory building in Cambridge Monday, where it aims to push ahead with efforts to develop an HIV vaccine and to study tuberculosis, which has affected hundreds of thousands of HIV patients in African and other developing countries. Bruce Walker, HMS professor of medicine, is the institute’s director. Daniel Kavanagh, HMS assistant professor of medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, is also quoted.

Boston has become a center for research into celiac disease. MGH opened a new celiac treatment and research center last month, led by Alessio Fasano, HMS visiting professor of pediatrics. Ronald Kleinman, the Charles Wilder Professor of Pediatrics at HMS and physician-in-chief at MassGeneral Hospital for Children, is also quoted.

Women who take a regular dose of aspirin may get a side benefit – a reduction in their risk of melanoma, a new study suggests. Robert Stern, the Carl J. Herzog Professor of Dermatology at HMS and chair of the Department of Dermatology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, is quoted.

Depression and anxiety could be Fukushima's lasting legacy

Two years ago today, an earthquake and tsunami triggered a meltdown at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in Japan. The World Health Organization recently predicted a very small rise in cancer risk from radioactive material that was released. For the nuclear refugees, though, anxiety and depression could be the more persistent hazard. Ronald Kessler, the McNeil Family Professor of Health Care Policy, is quoted.
