Model mice may mislead trauma researchers, study finds

Mice, the most commonly used laboratory animals in medical research, may be poor models for studying trauma or infections in humans, scientists found. H. Shaw Warren, HMS associate professor of pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital; Ronald Tompkins, the Sumner M. Redstone Professor of Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital; and Wenzhong Xiao, HMS lecturer on surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, were authors of the study.

Heart disease is number one killer of minority women

According to researchers, minority women are 66 percent less likely than white women to be aware of the risks and symptoms of heart disease. Even when they are aware, the study found, they are less likely to try to reduce their risks or seek treatment. Paula Johnson, HMS associate professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Malissa Wood, HMS assistant professor of medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, are quoted.
