About the Office of the Dean

The Office of the Dean provides institutional vision, support, and guidance for Harvard Medical School’s academic and administrative operations. We aim to advance the School’s mission to nurture a diverse, inclusive community dedicated to alleviating suffering and improving health and well-being for all through excellence in teaching and learning, discovery and scholarship, and service and leadership.

Dean George Q. Daley, MD, PhD, began his tenure on Jan. 1, 2017, leading a vibrant community of nearly 12,000 HMS faculty working in the 11 basic and social science departments comprising the Blavatnik Institute and at its 15 affiliated teaching hospitals and research institutes. The HMS community also includes more than 1,450 staff, 700 medical students, 850 PhD students, 350 master’s students, and 9,000 trainees.

Dean Daley is advised by a dedicated team of academic and administrative leaders. Located in the Gordon Hall of Medicine, the Office of the Dean manages the dean’s priorities, strategic projects, calendar, events, and speaking engagements and coordinates the Faculty Council.
