Smoking among Needham high schoolers plunged after legal age rose to 21

Smoking rates among high-school students in Needham have plummeted since the town implemented its first-in-the-nation restrictions limiting tobacco sales to people over 21, according to a survey published this month. The Education Development Center, a Waltham nonprofit, and specialists from Brown University and Harvard Medical School collaborated on the study.

An old-line diabetes drug may have new uses against diseases of aging

Despite many potential benefits of metformin to target aging-related ailments— and despite a recommendation from the American Diabetes Association that it be tried before any other drug for newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetics — a recent study found that only about half of all such people get metformin as their first prescribed medication. Niteesh Choudhry, associate professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, led the study.
