Lilly plans big Alzheimer's disease study after prior failures

Eli Lilly and Co plans this year to begin a new late-stage trial of solanezumab, its experimental treatment for Alzheimer’s disease that failed in earlier testing to significantly slow progression of the memory-robbing disease. Brigham and Women’s Hospital is helping coordinate the three-year study.

New drugs could drop cholesterol to extreme lows

A new class of cholesterol-fighting drugs could be coming to patients in the not-so-distant future, and experts say they could be a real game-changer in Americans’ battle to lower artery-clogging LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol. Elliott Antman, HMS associate dean for clinical and translational research and professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, is quoted.

Medical Schools decision to cut 31 custodial contract jobs prompts outcry

HMS will cut 31 custodial contract jobs. The cuts, which will take effect on August 17, stem from the cancellation of the Medical School’s approximately six-and-a-half-year-old contract with American Cleaning Company, Inc., a Brighton-based subcontractor that services the Medical School.

In the latest study investigating the side effects of statins, researchers report that the best-selling drugs are relatively safe. Huseyin Naci, HMS visiting fellow in population medicine, is the lead author of the study. Research by Paul Ridker, the Eugene Braunwald Professor of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, is also cited.

Hospitals OK study of brain injury treatment without consent

Starting as soon as next month, patients who arrive with a traumatic brain injury to emergency departments at Massachusetts General Hospital or Boston Medical Center could be enrolled in a medical study, possibly without their consent. Elizabeth Hohmann, HMS associate professor of medicine and Eric Rosenthal, HMS instructor in neurology, both of Massachusetts General Hospital, are quoted.
