Mills to serve as executive vice president and CFO

Richard Mills, executive dean for administration at HMS, was named Dartmouth College’s new executive vice president and chief financial officer and will assume his new role next month.

When disaster strikes, tweets point to ground zero

People around the world have live-tweeted natural disasters, elections and revolutions. New work from researchers at HMS show that a glut of tweets might help paramedics respond to health emergencies like those after the Boston Marathon bombings in April. Chris Cassa, HMS instructor in medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Rumi Chunara, HMS instructor in pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, are coauthors of the report.

Medical marijuana for kids? Some praise results while others worry about risks

Eighteen states, plus Washington, D.C., allow use of medical marijuana. A number of them provide prescriptions to children, with parental supervision, to treat a host of ills, ranging from autism to cancer to seizures. Critics argue that the remedy hasn’t been clinically tested in kids and might have some long-term ramifications. Sharon Levy, HMS assistant professor of pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, is quoted.

In an effort to collaborate around healthcare innovation, Harvard’s prestigious Business and Medical Schools formed a joint initiative last year called the Forum on Healthcare Innovation. Last fall they held their first conference and earlier today they released a 26-page report with excerpts and findings from that conference. The writer mentions Jeffrey S. Bostons Egyptian youth: Two years later

Two years ago, at the height of the first Egyptian uprising, RadioBoston spoke with a group of young Egyptians who were living in Massachusetts when former President Hosni Mubarak was thrown out of power. Then, they felt a surging sense of joy, possibility, hope, along with a little trepidation. Today, they’ve invited them back. Scientists grow a simple, human liver in a petri dish

Japanese scientists have cracked open a freaky new chapter in the sci-fi-meets-stem-cells era. A group in Yokohama reported it has grown a primitive liver in a petri dish using a person’s skin cells. George Daley, HMS professor of biological chemistry and molecular pharmacology at Boston Children’s Hospital, commented on the study.

US researchers say 2 men with bone marrow transplant stop HIV drugs, show no sign of virus

Two HIV-positive patients in the United States who underwent bone marrow transplants for cancer have stopped anti-retroviral therapy and still show no detectable sign of the HIV virus, researchers said Wednesday. Timothy Henrich, HMS instructor in medicine and Daniel Kuritzkes, HMS professor of medicine, both of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, led the study.
