Eligibility
Students who are pursuing a global health scholarly project may take advantage of this funding option if they need to travel to their site to prepare or finish their work or present their work to their collaborators. Your trip must be at least three weeks and up to seven weeks long.
Proposals for trips that merely involve meeting and greeting your research collaborators or observing their work unrelated to analysis will not be considered.
Expenses eligible for an OSE stipend include modest round-trip airfare plus $50 towards phone/SIM card. Immunizations needed for the project will be reimbursed at 100%

Before you apply, schedule a meeting with the chair of the Faculty Advisory Committee on Global Health to talk about your plans and ensure you are eligible to apply for funding.
Application & Deadlines
Deadline: At least two months prior to the intended start or travel date of the project:
- Complete the OSE funding application
- Submit to scholarsinmedicine@hms.harvard.edu:
- Project Proposal
- Include a budget with your expected roundtrip airfare costs
- Society and Mentor Approval of Travel Abroad Form
- Safety Information for International Travel Form
Your proposal will be reviewed by OSE faculty. The OSE will notify you if you need to make revisions to your proposal. It may take at least one month from submission to approval of your funding request.
Once Approved
Schedule a safety briefing with the Scholarly Engagement Program Administrator.
One Month Before Departure
The following items must all be completed and submitted to scholarsinmedicine@hms.harvard.edu:
- Harvard Acknowledgment of Risk and General Release Form
- Copy of your airfare itinerary and receipt
- Certificate of completion after viewing the Harvard Global Support Services’ pre-departure orientation
- The second confirmation email you recieve after you have registered your travel with International SOS for emergency support services
Within One Month of Your Return
The following items must all be completed and submitted to scholarsinmedicine@hms.harvard.edu to receive your stipend payment:
- An abstract. Your scholarly report should describe your scholarly project, including what you accomplished on your trip.
- All original and/or electronic receipts for your expenses. Receipts should show dates of purchases, what was purchased, amount paid and method of payment.
OSE stipends will be processed generally within 60 days after receiving your receipts and any required report. Ensure your mailing address is up to date in my.harvard when you submit your receipts.
