Medical Arabic Instructor at Harvard Medical School
The HMS Office of Scholarly Engagement is seeking a native Arabic-speaking physician to serve as the lead instructor of the Intermediate Medical Arabic course offered to HMS students for the Spring 2026 semester (February-May) and Fall 2026 semester (September–December 2026). The course focuses on oral speaking skills in patient care. Students are high-beginner to intermediate speakers of Arabic, typically in their first year of medical school. This course is offered for 90 minutes once a week in the late afternoon or early evening during the Fall semester (approximately 13 classes). No class is held during vacation weeks.
The goals of the course are 1) to enable students to conduct a history and physical examination of a patient in Arabic, 2) to present those findings to other clinicians, and 3) to familiarize students with cultural humility in caring for Arabic-speaking patients. Course references and a sample curriculum are available for planning the course sessions. Guest speakers may be invited to cover specific medical topics at various times of the year. The lead instructor will develop the syllabus and course content with the HMS Language Program Faculty Director with assistance from previous Arabic instructors. We are looking for that gifted individual who can combine grammar, medical language training, and cultural humility instruction to exceptional students who have a quick capacity to learn Arabic.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated excellence in teaching medical students and the ability to teach a range of proficiency levels of Arabic. An honorarium ($1500 per semester) will be dispensed to the instructor’s department per HMS policy. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled, but please apply no later than December 10, 2025.
Applicants should submit a cover letter with a statement describing their teaching philosophy and a CV or resume to Marcie Naumowicz in the Office of Scholarly Engagement.
