Dean’s Innovation Awards for the Use of Artificial Intelligence

October 31, 2023

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the HMS Dean’s Innovation Awards for the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Education, Research, and Administration. Harvard Medical School is requesting applications for innovative projects that utilize generative artificial intelligence to advance our mission. Grants of up to $100,000 per project will be awarded for one year with the possibility to extend or apply for a second year with additional funding.

The goals of this request for applications (RFA) are threefold:

  1. To sponsor innovative uses of generative AI that transform medical and graduate education, including new technologies for interactive simulation-based learning, adaptive tutoring systems, automated assessment, and other applications that enhance how we teach and learn in the classroom and beyond.
  2. To enable groundbreaking applications of generative AI that open new frontiers in medical and biological research across disciplines like medical imaging, drug discovery, genomics, structural analysis, public health informatics, and more.
  3. To improve administrative efficiencies and productivity through generative AI automation of workflows, development of intelligent decision support systems, improvements in data analytics and reporting, and other administrative applications.

Harvard Medical School aims to foster pioneering interdisciplinary collaboration between our researchers, faculty, and students across computer science, medicine, data science, engineering, and other domains. We encourage proposals that bring together complementary skillsets and collaboration across areas for maximum impact.

Eligibility, application criteria, and funding vary depending on the award topic area. To the extent possible, applicants are expected to leverage existing and forthcoming AI resources procured by HMS. See the RFA for detailed information about the program guidelines and the application process. Proposals of up to three pages are due by Dec. 11. More details on the RFA can be found on the Dean’s Innovation Awards website.

To learn more about this opportunity, please join us at a Program Q&A Session on Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.

Please email the Office for Research Operations with questions about the submission and selection process.

We look forward to receiving your most exciting ideas and applications.

Sincerely,

George Q. Daley
