A life-death predictor adds to a cancer’s strain

A new ocular melanoma genetic test reveals a patient’s prognosis with uncanny precision and cancer researchers say it is a taste of what may be coming as they continue to investigate the genes of cancer cells. Michael Birrer, HMS professor of medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital; Keith Flaherty, HMS associate professor of medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital; and Evangelos S. Gragoudas, the Charles Edward Whitten Professor of Ophthalmology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, are quoted.

Newly discovered immune system molecule could stop melanoma growth

Researchers have discovered a key molecule in the immune system that may effectively inhibit the growth of melanoma – a revolutionary find that could pave the way for new treatments of skin cancer. Thomas Kupper, the Thomas B. Fitzpatrick Professor of Dermatology and chair of the Department of Dermatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, is one of the lead authors of the study.

A decade after the Women’s Health Initiative report was released about hormone replacement therapy, women are still confused and so are many doctors. JoAnn Manson, the Michael and Lee Bell Professor of Women’s Health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, helped conduct the study.

Researchers found that Finnish babies who lived with a dog or - to a lesser extent - a cat spent fewer weeks with ear infections, coughs or running noses. T. Bernard Kinane, HMS associate professor of pediatrics at MassGeneral Hospital for Children, is quoted.
