Increased diabetes risks from statins outweighed by heart benefits, Boston researchers find

Six months after the US Food and Drug Administration required cholesterol-lowering statin drugs to carry warnings about diabetes risks, Brigham and Women’s Hospital researchers conclude in a new analysis of a landmark study that the increased likelihood of diabetes is outweighed by the drugs’ protective effects against heart attacks, strokes and heart disease deaths. Paul Ridker, the Eugene Braunwald Professor of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, is the leader of the study. Allison Goldfine, HMS associate professor of medicine at Joslin Diabetes Center, is also quoted.

Doctors have warned patients about drug interactions with grapefruit juice for years, but it turns out the tart drink might actually interact with certain drugs in a good way, reducing dosages and, therefore, costs and side effects, a new study shows. Scientists have identified a role for inflammatory monocytes in the progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (AML), indicating that these immune cells may represent a therapeutic target. Howard L. Weiner, the Robert L. Kroc Professor of Neurology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, is the senior author of the study.
