A group of medical school students and consumer advocates delivered a petition urging Gov. Deval Patrick to reconsider his decision last summer to allow pharmaceutical and medical device companies to pay for “modest meals and refreshments” at “educational” presentations for health-care professionals. The Station fire takes big toll on survivors

A new study hasfound that a high percentage of survivors of The Station nightclub fire in West Warwick, R.I., have battled depression and post-traumatic stress, regardless of whether they suffered burn injuries in the deadly blaze. Jeffrey Schneider, HMS assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, is the lead researcher.

Fungal infection poses challenges to patients, officials

Public health officials, physicians, and patients are grappling with many challenges in the current national meningitis outbreak: Fungal meningitis is usually exceedingly difficult to diagnose, and the treatment is risky and arduous. Paul Sax, HMS professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and James P. Rathmell, the Henry Knowles Beecher Professor of Anaesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital, are quoted.

Multivitamin use linked to lowered cancer risk

Researchers announced that a large clinical trial of nearly 15,000 older male doctors followed for more than a decade found that those taking a daily multivitamin experienced 8 percent fewer cancers than the subjects taking dummy pills. J. Michael Gaziano, HMS professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the VA Boston Healthcare System, is the lead author. David Chapin, HMS assistant clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, participated in the trial.

A team of Harvard and MIT researchers has created the first three-dimensional piece of artificial tissue that’s wired with electronics. Daniel Kohane, HMS professor of anaesthesia at Boston Children’s Hospital, was one of the senior researchers.

Seven decades after penicillin revolutionized the treatment of infections by killing bacteria, medicine is poised for another revolution. Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death among Americans, and a much larger contributor to chronic disability and health care costs than this ranking suggests. There’s no question that preventing strokes is important. But a big question is how best to do so and in whom. Michael Belkin, HMS professor of surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, is quoted.
