A medical resident studying microRNAs, a pediatric oncologist investigating how genes are structured and a medical student tracking our changing healthcare system are already making their marks.
All three have been recognized by Forbes magazine in its 2014 “30 Under 30 Who Are Changing the World” feature in the science and healthcare category.
Raghu Chivukula, 29, is an HMS clinical fellow in surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital who focuses on microRNAs and their role in blocking genes. His work with these chemical messengers has implications for regenerating intestines and potentially treating liver cancer.
Cigall Kadoch, 28, is an HMS assistant professor of pediatric oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute who analyzes changes in the physical structure of genes caused by mutations in other genes. She investigates a rare cancer called synovial sarcoma, and her insights could have bearing on other malignancies.
Zirui Song, 29, is a fourth-year HMS medical student and a graduate of the Harvard Ph.D. Program in Health Policy who is studying the U.S. healthcare system. So far his work shows that Accountable Care Organizations do slow spiraling costs, but cutting physician fees does not.
