The Lynch Foundation & Mary Lynch Witkowski

In an inspiring show of solidarity and foresight, the Lynch Foundation and Mary Lynch Witkowski, AB ’96, MBA ’01, MD ’16, have each committed $1.5 million to advance health equity through the support of postdoctoral fellows at Harvard Medical School. The gifts honor the late Paul Farmer, MD ’88, PhD ’90, a trailblazer in global health.

“Paul was a dear friend of the Lynch family since 1990,” says Peter Lynch, president and co-founder of the Lynch Foundation and a member of the HMS Board of Fellows and HMS Discovery Council. “He was such a visionary and a successful leader.” The foundation’s gift targets health equity on an international scale, focusing on regions outside the U.S. The gift from Witkowski addresses health equity within the U.S.

Lynch highlights Farmer’s dedication to training and inspiring the next generation of global health leaders. “These Global Health Equity Fellowships will carry forward his legacy by creating a new pipeline of leaders capable of addressing the complex health challenges facing underserved communities worldwide,” he says.

Witkowski, who serves on both the HMS Board of Fellows and the HMS Advisory Council on Education, says the health care delivery system in America is structurally inadequate for everyone and even worse for those who need it most. “Supporting health care delivery research is critical to complementing the value from basic research and clinical practice and ultimately driving change,” she says.

The experiences of her father’s close friend George Vanderheiden, who died in 2022, spotlighted the need to support domestic efforts, she says. “He was a person who felt he had the benefits of financial access to health care and a strong support system his whole life, and yet he struggled with navigating the health care system.”

Mercedes Becerra, AB ’91, SM ’93, SD ’99—herself a former postdoc under Paul Farmer—is poised to oversee the fellowship program. “Being a postdoctoral trainee with Dr. Farmer was an incredible privilege because I got to see how research intersects with many dimensions of health equity work,” says Becerra, the Jeffrey Cheah Professor of Global Health at HMS. “Success for this new program will be seen when junior scholars bring new ideas and their scholarship is enriched by the mentorship and collegial network they gain here.”

Becerra’s own journey exemplifies the potential of postdoctoral research. Under Farmer’s guidance, she conducted critical epidemiological research that validated the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, making a significant global impact.

Vikram Patel, MBBS, MSc, PhD, the Paul Farmer Professor and Chair of Global Health and Social Medicine at HMS, underscores the importance of these fellowships. “They will bring early career scholars with original and innovative ideas into our community and amplify scholarship in health equity in the U.S. and globally,” he says.

The potential synergies between the global and domestic focus of these gifts are immense. “As Paul Farmer would say, there are tremendous disparities in care across the globe, and while the issues and people are diverse, the delivery problems carry across geographies,” notes Witkowski. “Having both U.S. and global funding will provide postdocs with peers doing similar research who can share powerful lessons on how to evaluate and understand the problems, how to measure them, and how to try to implement improvements.”
