Harvard Medical School Dean Jeffrey S. Flier recognized Cameron Wright as the inaugural incumbent of the Mathisen Family Professorship in Surgery in the Field of Thoracic Surgery in a May 9 ceremony in HMS’s New Research Building.
“Cam is respected both within the Harvard medical community and beyond for his exceptional clinical skills,” said Flier. “Let me recognize him as an outstanding member of our faculty, a skilled clinician and a truly deserving inaugural incumbent for this great honor.”
Wright became an assistant professor of surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1993, and is now associate chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery and the chair of the quality assurance committee for the Mass. General Department of Surgery.
Douglas Mathisen, chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Mass. General and the Grillo Professor of Surgery at HMS, also was celebrated as the ultimate namesake for the professorship. Upon his retirement from the HMS faculty, the professorship will be renamed the Douglas Mathisen Professorship in Surgery in the Field of Thoracic Surgery.
“Highly regarded by his patients and fellow clinicians alike, the naming of this professorship in Doug’s honor is a fitting tribute not only to his contributions to MGH’s thoracic surgery program, but also to his advancements made in the field of thoracic surgery during his 30-year tenure as a Harvard faculty member,” said Flier.
Donations from Charles and Sara Fabrikant, family and friends of Dr. Mathisen and two anonymous individuals made the professorship possible.
