Opening the Sept. 15 celebration of the Joyce R. Tedlow Professorship in Psychiatry in the Field of Depression Studies, Dean Jeffrey Flier addressed the first incumbent, Jonathan E. Alpert, saying, “Jonathan, you are not only a leader in the field of depression studies, but an outstanding member of our faculty, a dedicated educator and a truly deserving inaugural incumbent for this great honor.”
Peter Slavin, president of Massachusetts General Hospital, called Alpert “a stellar role model and educator” and added that he is an inspiration to his colleagues. Alpert’s research has contributed to further understanding depression and treatment.

Fava reflected on Alpert’s enthusiasm for research, clinical care and devotion to education.
Alpert’s passion for depression studies was evident when he expressed his heartfelt thanks to his colleagues, mentors, and family and friends, calling the celebration, “the most cherished memory in my lifetime.” He then looked to the future, saying this chair holds abundant value for psychiatry and HMS because it will further the research, scholarship and training in depression. He said the specialty has come a long way, but added, “We have barely scratched the surface.” With a clear sense of purpose, he said leaders in the field are poised like never before to continue making advancements.
The Joyce R. Tedlow Professorship in Psychiatry in the Field of Depression Studies was made possible by a generous gift from Richard Tedlow.
