Harvard Medical School opens center for primary care, appoints director

HMS announced today that Russell S. Phillips, HMS professor of medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, has been named director of the Harvard Medical School Center for Primary Care. Andrew L. Ellner, HMS instructor in medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, was hired as co-director.

Heart attack victims cut risk with 2 drinks, Harvard study says

According to new research, men who have two drinks a day after surviving a first heart attack have a lower risk of death from heart disease than non-drinkers. Jennifer Pai, HMS assistant professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, led the study.

Co-pays may affect which kids get their meds

Kids with asthma end up in the hospital slightly more often when co-pays for their medications are higher, suggests a new report. Anupam Jena, HMS clinical fellow in medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, is one of the investigators.

Warning: Doctors could misread new depression guidelines

Researchers have found that it is possible for doctors to misread the latest American Psychiatric Association guidelines and think the best first step is to write up a prescription for antidepressants. Harold Bursztajn, HMS associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, is one of the authors.

Bad wire in heart device led to 22 deaths, study says

A defect in wires that connect hearts to defibrillators caused at least 22 deaths, possibly as a result of a short circuit that is difficult to detect during routine monitoring, according to a new study. Lawrence M. Epstein, HMS associate professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, is quoted.

The U.S. Supreme Court is currently focused on President Obama’s health care plan. Lost in all the legal talk is a unique effort by local doctors to improve the level of health care, especially in populations of color. Augustus White, the Ellen and Melvin Gordon Distinguished Professor of Medical Education and Alden Landry, HMS instructor in medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, are quoted.

'Almost alcoholic': Close to the real thing, says new book

Many people live with physical conditions such as prehypertension or prediabetes that are not quite full-blown illnesses, and a new series of books argues that the same is true of mental health conditions. Julie Silver, HMS assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, developed the idea for the book series. Robert Doyle, HMS clinical instructor in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, is a co-author.

A new book, “The Autism Revolution,” by Martha Herbert, HMS assistant professor of neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and CommonHealth writer Karen Weintraub asserts a more comprehensive and wholistic view in which autism is really a condition of the whole body and should be treated with that in mind.
