They work tirelessly to help students understand the science of life. They bring future doctors together with patients to mold tomorrow’s discerning, empathetic physicians. They are mentors during students’ time at HMS and sometimes for decades beyond. They are members of the HMS faculty who were recognized last month for their outstanding commitment to teaching and mentorship.
“You probably all had a teacher who stood out, who made learning fun, who demystified the inexplicable,” Jules Dienstag, HMS Dean for Medical Education, told attendees at the May 9 awards ceremony in the Carl W. Walter, MD Amphitheater. “These are the kinds of teachers we have in our midst, and we’re lucky to have so many of them.”
Award recipients were introduced by students and colleagues who had nominated them. Nominators Sophia McKinley, a second-year HMS student, said she aspired to be like her nominee, Barbara Cockrill, HMS assistant professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
“Dr. Cockrill reminded us that it’s a privilege to be allowed into people’s lives when they are ill,” McKinley told the crowd before addressing her teacher directly. “I hope you teach for many more years. The Harvard students and their patients will be much better for it.”
