The Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence is being dedicated today in Rwanda. Organizers of the project, which include the Rwandan ministry of health, Partners In Health and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, hope the only specialized cancer facility in the country can serve as a model for addressing the rapid rise of cancer in the developing world. Paul Farmer, the Kolokotrones University Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine and chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at HMS; Neo Tapela, HMS instructor in medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital; and Lawrence Shulman, HMS associate professor of medicine at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, are quoted.
