Seven Harvard Medical School researchers are among the 145 newly elected members of the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors a scientist can receive. Membership is determined by formal nominations from current Academy members, followed by an extensive vetting process that results in a final ballot at the Academy’s annual meeting in April.
The newly elected members from HMS are:
- Stephen Blacklow, the Gustavus Adolphus Pfeiffer Professor of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology and head of the Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology in the Blavatnik Institute at HMS
- Jon Clardy, the Christopher T. Walsh, PhD Professor of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at HMS
- Benjamin Ebert, the HMS Richard and Susan Smith Professor of Medicine at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and president and CEO of Dana-Farber
- Stephen Liberles, professor of cell biology at HMS
- Wade Regehr, the Bullard Professor of Neurobiology at HMS
- Johannes Walter, the Edward S. Wood Professor of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at HMS
Yi Zhang, the HMS Fred S. Rosen Professor of Pediatrics and professor of genetics at Boston Children’s Hospital
The National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit institution that was established under a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. With the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine, it provides science, engineering, and health policy advice to the federal government and other organizations.
