Harvard Medical School’s continuing medical education program recently earned accreditation with commendation, the highest possible ranking, from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

“With healthcare rapidly evolving and information increasing daily, continuing medical education is vital for health professionals to remain current on emerging trends in clinical care and scientific discovery,” said David Roberts, HMS dean for external education. “Our leadership at the forefront of lifelong learning enables HMS to share its remarkable educational, clinical and research expertise with health professionals around the world.”

Roberts noted that the commendation was a reflection of the importance that faculty and staff throughout the school have placed on lifelong learning, and he extended his congratulations for this achievement to the entire team in the office of Global and Continuing Education, especially the efforts of Ajay Singh, senior associate dean for global education and continuing education, and the leadership team in the CME program.

“This commendation demonstrates how seriously all of the HMS community take the work of postgraduate medical education,” Singh said. “It’s great to see that dedication recognized. Everyone in our unit played a role, but in particular, I want to highlight the contribution of Mary Lou Townsend and Danna Muir, who together led this important effort for us.”

The council employs a rigorous, multilevel process for evaluating institutions' continuing medical education programs according to the high accreditation standards adopted by all seven of its member organizations.

These organizations include the American Board of Medical Specialties, American Hospital Association, American Medical Association, Association for Hospital Medical Education, Association of American Medical Colleges, Council of Medical Specialty Societies, and Federation of State Medical Boards.

HMS offers more than 200 CME courses, including live events and distance learning. The accreditation will be in place until 2023.
