In Memoriam: Andrew T. McAfee

Andrew T. McAfee, an HMS clinical instructor in Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, died on Aug. 27 at age 50, the result of a tragic motor scooter accident.

Andrew T. McAfee, an HMS clinical instructor in Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, died on Aug. 27 at age 50, the result of a tragic motor scooter accident.

McAfee received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 1990. He joined the HMS community as a resident in Medicine at the then New England Deaconess Hospital. In 1994, he became an attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at BWH and joined the ranks at HMS as an instructor in Medicine.

He is remembered as a gifted clinician, teacher and scholar. Of his many honors, the Outstanding Research Mentor, awarded by the residents in the Harvard-affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency, was among his most cherished. McAfee received this award for four consecutive years.

Beginning in 2004, McAfee served as executive director of Epidemiology for i3 Drug Safety in Waltham while continuing his clinical career in the Emergency Department at BWH. Recently, he accepted an offer to rejoin the Brigham full time as a member of the Department of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics. He held a Master of Science degree in epidemiology from HSPH and was a highly regarded practitioner in that field. His research focused on large-scale evaluation of the safety and effectiveness of pharmaceutical agents widely prescribed for adults and children.

McAfee is survived by his wife, Jill Hahn; children, Emma, Jordan and Elie; and parents, James and Matilde (Paolini) McAfee.
