Institute of Medicine Elects 5 from HMS

Five faculty members from HMS are among the 70 new appointees to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Established in 1970, the institute is both an honorific membership organization and an advisory group that analyzes health issues and makes recommendations on national health policy.

Appointment recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and dedication to service. With their election, members make a commitment to volunteer a significant amount of time on IOM committees, which engage in a broad range of studies on health policy issues. The new members from HMS are listed below.

Katrina Alison Armstrong, Jackson Professor of Clinical Medicine at Harvard Medical School and physician-in-chief, Massachusetts General Hospital


Judy Garber, HMS professor of medicine and director, Center for Cancer genetics and Prevention, Dana Farber Cancer Institute


Ashish Jha, HMS assistant professor of medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and assistant professor of health policy and management, Harvard School of Public Health


Mark Schuster, William Berenberg Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and chief of general pediatrics, Boston Children's Hospital


Christopher Walsh, Bullard Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at Harvard Medical School, Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, and chief, Division of Genetics and genomics, Boston Children's Hospital
