Dear HMS Community,
As you know, our laboratories are international melting pots, and our patients within the greater Boston area—as well as those in the global community we increasingly serve—are diverse. Our work will cultivate an environment that celebrates our diversity, values cultural sensitivity, promotes scholarly inquiry, and fosters our highest aspirations to create and nurture a diverse community of the best people committed to leadership in alleviating human suffering caused by disease.
It is critical for us to celebrate this diversity and to chart a course for improvement so that our community will nurture the best science, education and service; remedy the pipeline problem in the biomedical sciences; interface better with our patients and communities; and reduce health disparities. The HMS Diversity Inclusion Task Force will tackle issues of diversity in a deep and substantive way by placing issues under a microscope to fully examine them, review input and insights solicited from the broader HMS community, identify metrics to track our progress and engineer a plan for how we can promote and support diversity throughout our community.
The Task Force I’ve assembled will engage students, trainees, faculty, staff, and administrators to explore diversity on our campus, how we treat each other and what steps we can take to ensure equity and inclusion across our communities as we work to advance the HMS Mission and Values.
The input of our community is invaluable and will help us to create a rich learning environment that is welcoming to all. I look forward to working with all of you on this very important initiative that will serve as the foundation of our future success.
Sincerely,
George Q. Daley, MD, PhD
