Awards & Recognitions: March 2023

Honors received by HMS faculty, staff and students

Dan Barouch, the HMS William Bosworth Castle Professor of Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and professor of immunology in the Blavatnik Institute at HMS, has been awarded the King Faisal Prize for Medicine. Barouch was recognized with co-recipient Sarah Gilbert of Oxford University for their use of novel technology in the development of COVID-19 vaccines.

Unlike traditional methods of developing vaccines that use a weakened or killed form of the original virus and require a long time to develop, Barouch genetically modified a harmless adenovirus (called Ad26) to carry the genetic instructions for the coronavirus spike protein. This approach allowed a vaccine to be developed in a matter of months.

Barouch received the award in March at a ceremony in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Two HMS researchers have been named 2023 Distinguished Award winners by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) in recognition of their outstanding contributions to cardiovascular medicine. Recipients are nominated by their peers and then selected by the ACA Awards Committee.

The awardees from HMS are:

Marcelo Di Carli, the HMS Seltzer Family Professor of Radiology and professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, who received the 2023 Distinguished Mentor Award.

Michael Honigberg, HMS assistant professor of medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, who was named the 2023 Douglas P. Zipes Distinguished Young Scientist.

Christine Seidman, the HMS Thomas W. Smith Professor of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and professor of genetics in the Blavatnik Institute at HMS, who received the 2023 Valentin Fuster Award for Innovation in Science.

Di Carli, Honigberg, and Seidman were recognized at the ACA’s annual Scientific Session Together in March in New Orleans.
