Honors received by HMS faculty, postdocs, staff, and students

Two faculty members from Harvard Medical School are among the 65 newly elected fellows of the American Academy of Microbiology, the honorific leadership group within the American Society for Microbiology.

The American Society for Microbiology is one of the largest professional societies dedicated to the life sciences and is composed of more than 37,000 scientists and health practitioners. Its mission is to promote and advance the microbial sciences.

The two new fellows from HMS are:

  • Judy Lieberman, HMS professor of pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital
  • Ramnik Xavier, the HMS Kurt J. Isselbacher Professor of Medicine in the Field of Gastroenterology at Massachusetts General Hospital

Two HMS researchers have been named 2025 fellows of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB).

Fellows are selected for exceptional and sustained service to the ASBMB and accomplishments in research, education, mentorship, diversity and inclusion, advocacy, and service to the scientific community.

The two new fellows from HMS are:

  • Gregory Petsko, HMS professor of neurology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital
  • Hao Wu, the HMS Asa and Patricia Springer Professor of Structural Biology and professor of biological chemistry and molecular pharmacology at Boston Children’s Hospital

Petsko and Wu will be recognized with the other 2025 fellows at the ASBMB annual meeting in Chicago in April.

Spyros Artavanis-Tsakonas, professor emeritus of cell biology in the Blavatnik Institute at HMS, has been named to receive the Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences with Iva Greenwald of Columbia University.

First awarded in 2002, the Wiley Prize is presented annually to recognize contributions that have opened new fields of research or have advanced concepts in a particular biomedical discipline.

Artavanis-Tsakonas and Greenwald are being honored for their discovery of the genes and novel biochemical mechanism of Notch signaling, a cell-cell communication pathway that controls myriad cell fate decisions in multicellular animals and plays critical roles in human development, health, and diseases such as cancer.

“The Wiley Foundation honors scientists who are dedicated to solving complex biological mechanisms which result in seminal discoveries that open the door for future innovations,” said foundation chair Deborah Wiley. “The work of the 23rd Annual Wiley Prize recipients truly upholds this mission by laying the foundation for core genetic and regulatory framework of the Notch signaling system, which unravels the fundamentals of normal and disease development and has fueled research into medicine for new treatments.”

Artavanis-Tsakonas will receive his award during the Wiley Prize Lecture at the Rockefeller University in April.
