Karen Adelman, the Edward S. Harkness Professor of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology in the Blavatnik Institute at Harvard Medical School, has been elected an associate member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). The lifelong membership recognizes outstanding achievements in the life sciences.

The 120 newly elected members were nominated and elected by current EMBO members.

“The new EMBO Members and Associate Members have made immense contributions to fundamental life science research, and, in many cases, their work has paved the way for innovations that have improved lives and livelihoods around the world,” said EMBO Director Fiona Watt.

Adelman will be formally welcomed to EMBO at the annual members’ meeting in Heidelberg, Germany, in October.

Cynthia Morton, the HMS William Lambert Richardson Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, has received the 2024 Leadership Award from the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG). The award recognizes leadership and vision in promoting genetics and genomics knowledge in the broader scientific community.

Morton was recognized for her research leading to identification of HMGA2, the first gene implicated in uterine fibroids. Her research has focused on finding genes predisposing women to develop uterine fibroids, as well as genes involved in human development and deafness.

Morton and her fellow ASHG award recipients will be recognized at the ASHG annual meeting in Denver in November.
