He is responsible for the maintenance of records and procedures required to adequately safeguard the assets of the organization, and insure the timely and accurate preparation of periodic financial statements. He directs the organization’s strategic and operational financial planning, budgeting process, accounting and finance practices, financial risk assessment, forecasting and variance analysis; and will maintain relations with the University, affiliated hospitals and research institutions.
As the chief financial officer of HMS, Michael is a key member of the dean’s senior leadership team. He has over 20 years of experience in higher education, most recently as CFO for the Boston University School of Medicine. His proven financial management experience, particularly his strong command of financial principles as they relate to academic medical centers will no doubt be an asset to the medical school. He is a proven community builder and leader who is capable of looking “beyond the numbers” to help faculty achieve their scientific and training goals.
In July of 2008, Michael was recruited as assistant dean of financial operations at the Boston University School of Medicine. During his tenure BUSM saw numerous changes in administrative and financial operations. Offices such as Proposal Development (pre‐award) and the Office of Financial and Grants Administration (post-award) were created to better organize and functionalize administrative staff to provide high levels of service in support of the faculty.
Michael also led the implementation of BU’s new ERP system (SAP) in July 2011 for the medical school. As the university moved forward replacing its legacy general ledger, grants management, human resource, payroll and organizational management systems he created the necessary resources to manage critical business operations during conversion. He oversaw campus wide weekly user forums for administrators that lasted a year after go‐live in order to equip staff with the tools necessary to reach stable business operations. In January 2012 Michael was promoted to associate dean as his role as CFO continued to expand.
Michael was with Boston University from 1995 to 2016 initially joining as the financial manager for information technology and then director of finance for the consolidated family of IT departments. He is a graduate of the University of Maine and received a master’s in finance from BU.
