Interim Chief Financial Officer

David Smallwood has served in the Harvard Medical School finance department for 18 years, becoming interim chief financial officer at HMS in January 2020. In this role, he is responsible for leading the School’s financial planning and analysis, procurement, and accounting teams; serving as a strategic partner to the dean and other members of the HMS executive team; advising and facilitating multiyear financial planning, forecasting and budgeting; and managing relations with the school’s key stakeholders. Prior to this appointment, Smallwood was director of financial planning and analysis, having risen through the ranks as a key member of the finance department’s leadership team as manager of budget and analysis and senior finance and planning administrator.

Smallwood recently worked successfully with the finance team to decrease the School’s deficit and rebuild the HMS endowment, playing an integral role in the School’s financial sustainability initiatives and overall policy development, including the evaluation and execution of the long-term lease of 4 Blackfan Circle. He has been closely involved in both financial planning and operations for the School’s strategic initiatives. David earned his MBA from the Babson F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business.
