What motivates your work at HMS?
I truly believe that a diverse scientific community broadens scientific innovation. As Outreach Committee Chair of the Harvard Medical Postdoc Association, my role is to build bridges between communities. In collaboration with the MGH Postdoc Association, MGH Center for Diversity and Inclusion, and Bunker Hill Community College, I founded the Pathways to Science and Medicine initiative to connect community college students with faculty and fellows at Harvard-affiliated hospitals through workshops and a mentoring program. Community colleges provide education to students who are low income, first-generation college students, immigrants, and underrepresented minorities. My goal is to make science and medicine accessible and to even out the playing field for more students — bringing more people into the scientific and medical fields. To build a diverse scientific community, we need to make everybody feel they belong.
