Rakesh Jain, the A. Werk Cook Professor of Radiation Oncology (Tumor Biology) at Massachusetts General Hospital, has received an $8.8 million Breast Cancer Innovator Award from the Department of Defense (DoD) to develop complementary vascular strategies for breast cancer treatment.
Jain’s efforts will attempt to improve both the delivery and effectiveness of anticancer drugs by normalizing tumor blood vessels and to identify biomarkers for personalizing these treatment approaches.
The award was conceived in 2001 by the DoD’s Breast Cancer Research Program to support visionary individuals in diverse fields who commit to focusing their talents on breast cancer. This year Jain was selected as the sole recipient of the award in a global competition. He is also director of the Edwin Steele Laboratory of Tumor Biology at MGH.
