Who Should Apply

The Master of Medical Sciences in Clinical Investigation program is designed for physicians and doctoral-level researchers who are ready to advance toward greater independence in clinical or translational research.

Applicants should hold an MD, PhD, MBBS, MBBCh, or comparable degree and be actively engaged in research. The program is particularly well suited for professionals who want to strengthen their skills in study design, data analysis, scientific communication, and research leadership.

This program is designed for:

  • Clinical or research fellows preparing for independent investigation
  • Junior faculty building or expanding a research portfolio
  • Physicians pursuing careers as clinician-investigators
  • Translational scientists applying laboratory methods to clinical questions
  • Researchers interested in clinical trials or comparative research
  • Professionals preparing to lead multidisciplinary research teams

Students join the program from around the world, bringing experience across specialties, institutions, and research environments.

Our graduates are prepared to pursue roles such as independent investigator, research director, principal investigator, academic faculty member, or chief medical officer.

Harvard Medical School MD Students

Earn a joint MD MMSc degree at HMS

Harvard Medical School MD students can participate in an accelerated Master of Medical Sciences in Clinical Investigation degree program. This is a 56-credit program comprised of 16 credits of taught courses (during M3 and/or M4) and 40 credits for mentored research during the fifth year.
