The Student Mentorship Program at Harvard Medical School voted to name this mentorship award in memory of Dr. Shannon, who died in March 2009. Dr. Shannon was a pediatrician for more than 25 years. He served as chief emeritus of emergency services at Boston Children’s Hospital and was the first African American to be named a full professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. This award recognizes Dr. Shannon’s contributions as a teacher and as a mentor over his two decades at Harvard Medical School.
