Harvard Medical School Dean for Academic and Clinical Affairs Nancy Tarbell recognized Ron Walls as the inaugural incumbent of the Neskey Family Professorship in Emergency Medicine in a May 2 ceremony at HMS’s Gordon Hall of Medicine.
“Ron, you are an outstanding member of our faculty, an exceptional leader and educator, a skilled clinician and researcher and a very deserving inaugural incumbent for this great honor,” said Tarbell.
Walls is chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His research focuses on emergency airway management, surge capacities for mass casualties and medical simulation training. He was instrumental in the treatment of the patients brought to Brigham and Women’s after the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.
“Because of Ron’s leadership, his commitment to train and drill staff to prepare for unthinkable scenarios occurring in the heart of our city, all 39 patients brought through the Brigham’s doors survived,” said Tarbell. “Ron, the success of your leadership is recognized not only by the survivors and their families, but also by our medical community, our city and all the hospitals that are looking to the Brigham as an exemplary model for emergency care.”
Other speakers at the ceremony included Elizabeth Nabel, president of Brigham and Women’s, and David Brown, chief of emergency medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Funded by a gift from David and Sharon Neskey, the Neskey Family Professorship will support exceptional faculty members as they work to advance the field of emergency medicine.
