The American Society of Hematology (ASH) is set to honor two HMS professors for their contributions to the understanding and treatment of blood diseases. The awards will be presented at the 52nd ASH annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, in December.
David Scadden, the Gerald and Darlene Jordan professor of medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, will receive the 2010 Dameshek Prize for his landmark contributions to stem cell biology. Scadden’s lab was the first to show that modifying the protein CXCR4 can lead to stem cell mobilization. More recently, the lab also defined two new molecular regulators of stem cell homing and engraftment.
Leonard Zon, the Grousbeck professor of pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Boston, will be recognized with the E. Donnall Thomas Lecture and Prize for his research into the development and regulation of blood-forming stem cells.
The prize, named after a Nobel Prize laureate and past society president, recognizes pioneering research achievements in hematology.
In total, six scientists from across the globe will be honored at the event.
