James Januzzi, Jr., was honored as the first incumbent of the Hutter Family Professorship in Medicine in the Field of Cardiology in a ceremony at Harvard Medical School’s Gordon Hall of Medicine on Sept. 8.
“Already a well-respected member of the professoriate,” said Nancy Tarbell, HMS dean for academic and clinical affairs, Januzzi’s being named the Hutter Family Professor of Medicine in the Field of Cardiology “further distinguishes him as a leader in the field of cardiology and among his peers in the Harvard Medical community.”
Januzzi’s research focuses on cardiac biomarker testing, while his clinical practice specializes in acute myocardial infarction, chronic coronary artery disease, acute heart failure, chronic heart failure and aortic disease. His work on natriuretic peptides has influenced diagnostic and prognostic decision-making around the world and been incorporated into clinical practice guidelines for the care of patients with heart failure.
Januzzi is director of the Cardiac Intensive Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital and has been a member of the cardiology division there since 2000. He also has served as the cardiology consultant to the Boston Red Sox since 2005.
The professorship was named for Adolph “Dolph” Hutter, Jr., HMS professor of medicine and director of the cardiac performance program at Mass General. Upon his retirement, it will be renamed the Adolph M. Hutter, Jr., Professorship in Medicine in the Field of Cardiology.
Hutter is a general adult clinical cardiologist with special interests in coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease and the athletic heart. He also is the cardiologist for the Boston Bruins, New England Patriots and New England Revolution.
“The naming of this professorship in Dolph’s honor is a fitting tribute not only to his incredible contributions and dedication to the Division of Cardiology, but also to his advancements made in the field of cardiology during his tenure of over four decades as a Harvard faculty member,” said Tarbell.
The professorship was made possible by Arthur and Sandra Irving, longtime supporters of Mass General and Hutter’s research, in recognition of the care Arthur Irving received from Hutter.
Speakers at the ceremony included Peter Slavin, president of Mass General and HMS professor of health care policy; Katrina Armstrong, the HMS Jackson Professor of Clinical Medicine and head of the Department of Medicine at Mass General; and Arthur Irving, owner of Irving Oil.
