Cigarette smoking is responsible for at least 345,962 cancer deaths in the U.S. each year, according to a new study. Researchers from the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center combined data from the 2011 National Health Interview Survey, the Cancer Prevention Study II and five studies that are known as the Pooled Contemporary Cohort to estimate the number and proportion of deaths in the U.S attributable to cigarette smoking.
