In a ceremony at Harvard Medical School’s Gordon Hall of Medicine, Jeffrey S. Flier, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard University, recognized Dean Eliott, associate director of the Retina Service at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, as the first incumbent of the Stelios Evangelos Gragoudas Professorship in Ophthalmology at HMS.
“Endowed professorships represent the highest honor we can bestow upon our faculty members,” Flier said at the Sept. 12, 2013 event. “Already a well-respected member of the professoriate, Dean now holds the notable title of Stelios Evangelos Gragoudas Associate Professor of Ophthalmology—a title that distinguishes him further as a leader among his peers within the Harvard Medical community and beyond.”
Eliott, a vitreoretinal surgeon, runs a well-established research program focused on the development of novel approaches to combat retinal disease. He has served as principal investigator on several clinical trials and has special interest in diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, trauma and surgery for complex retina-vitreous disorders.
“Dean, you are an outstanding member of our faculty, an exceptional researcher, a skilled clinician, and a very deserving inaugural incumbent for this great honor,” said Flier.
Flier’s praise was echoed by John Fernandez, president and chief executive officer of Mass Eye and Ear; Joan Miller, HMS Henry Willard Williams Professor of Ophthalmology and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Mass Eye and Ear; and Anthony Adamis, HMS lecturer on ophthalmology and vice president and global head of ophthalmology at Genentech, Inc.
The professorship is currently named after the father of Evangelos “Evan” Gragoudas. Evan Gragoudas is the HMS Charles Edward Whitten Professor of Ophthalmology at Mass Eye and Ear and a world authority on the diagnosis and management of intraocular tumors. The professorship, which was made possible by the Mass Eye and Ear board of directors, will be renamed in his honor upon his retirement.
