Why IMPACT?

In the fall of 2019, a group of senior institutional leaders from international medical schools convened at Harvard Medical School (HMS) for a first-of-its-kind opportunity to explore trends, developments and current best practices in medical school education. This inaugural IMPACT Symposium was met with significant interest and a room filled to capacity. The outcome was a transformative learning and networking opportunity. This group gathered again to continue the conversation in a virtual program format in April 2021 with a focus on developing new paradigms for teaching, learning and clinical practice in the post-pandemic world.

As a result of the shared learning and ongoing global health care challenges, this group of medical education leaders continue to collaborate to improve the academic experience and global health systems.

To maintain these connections and collaborative opportunities, Harvard Medical School will be hosting Emerging Trends from the IMPACT Community, a 90-minute community forum and discussion on March 3, 2022.

The Disproportionate Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Academic Women in Health Professions Education

There is significant data in the STEMM literature about the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on academic women in STEMM. In this session we will focus on those in health care education. This is on a backdrop of what has already been described as a ‘leaky pipeline’ for women, in relation to academic career development in STEMM. In health care education, because of lockdowns, campus closures and health care systems being overwhelmed by COVID-19, there have been tremendous disruptions, a dramatic increase in workload and significant stress and burnout. But, as we all know, out of challenge emerges opportunity, and there have been amazing adaptations and accomplishments achieved by many over the past 18–20 months. In this session we will address the challenges (particularly on the careers of academic women) that the COVID-19 pandemic has had, but further to this, we will look to the opportunities and potential positive outcomes that may have also emerged. Also, these issues are not exclusive to women and there will be gems, ideas and solutions potentially relevant to all that emerge during this session. This session will also involve garnering the collective wisdom, experience and strength of attendees via small and large discussions during the session and afterwards via discussion boards.

Medical Education Evidence in the Pandemic: A Solvable Puzzle?

The COVID-19 pandemic has a profound impact on the health professions education research and evidence base. A large number of publications appeared sharing experiences and innovations implemented in different health professions education (HPE) settings, but the dynamics of the pandemic make it difficult to find, select, critically appraise and apply these scholarly products. In this session we will provide an overview of the current HPE literature trends and discuss potential long-term implications for the health care community. IMPACT participants will brainstorm about how we can contribute to approach this complex challenge.

    Medical Education Reimagined: The Focus of IMPACT 2021

    Now more than ever, the world needs innovative and forward-thinking approaches to medical education. IMPACT 2021 focused on transitions to online learning and hybrid delivery of medical education, as we lead our institutions to develop new paradigms for teaching, learning and clinical practice.in the post-pandemic world.   Themes included:

    • Leadership experiences in transitioning to, and incorporating, online learning
    • Innovative approaches to creating effective virtual learning experiences
    • Designing curricula responding to the changing delivery of healthcare
    • Faculty development for hybrid and online programs

    The Symposium included interactive sessions and break out groups and a schedule designed to accommodate colleagues from around the world.  Each day will include 3-4 hours of virtual engagement.

    • Days 1, 3 and 5 were “Global” Days – with everyone together, from 7:00 –10:30 AM EST
    • Days 2 and 4 were “Regional” Days – Latin America, Canada, Europe and Africa from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM EST, and Asia and Australia from 7:00 – 10:00 PM EST
