  • Michail Papamichail, MD, PhD Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cancer Immunology

    ELIGIBILIE APPLICANTS: Postdoctoral Fellows from Greece at HMS, HSDM or HMS Affiliated Hospitals
    FOCUS: Cancer Immunology

    Description: The Michail Papamichail, MD, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellowship was established at Harvard Medical School to provide financial assistance for Greek national postdoctoral fellows pursuing basic biomedical research in the fields of cancer immunotherapy, cancer immunology, tumor biology or immunology.    Eligible applicants must apply through the Office for Clinical and Academic Affairs Foundation Funds Program. 

    Amount of Support:  The award will provide 75% of salary (up to $78,00) for one year with the possibility of extended annual funding. The award is restricted to salary support only, and does not include fringe benefits). 

    Individuals selected for support will be required to submit narrative report after 10 months describing their research projects, overall training experiences, etc. that will be shared with the philanthropist who established this fellowship.

    Eligible candidates:

    1.     Received a Ph.D. and/or MD. degree between 2020 and 2024. (Applications for clinical research projects will not be reviewed).

    2.     Research focused on cancer immunotherapy, cancer immunology, tumor biology or immunology must be performed at a quad based or HMS affiliated hospital faculty member laboratory.

    3.     Must be a Greek national.

    Required materials:

    1.     Statement of interest and description of research project (Limit 2 pages. May include an additional page for references and figures. (Font size must be 11 points or larger and no more than six lines per inch.

    2.    Letter of nomination and commitment from sponsoring HMS faculty member.

    • The mentor’s commitment to the successful implementation and execution of the proposed research project should be clearly stated in the letter of commitment. 
    • For applicants not already working at HMS, the letter of commitment must state that the applicant has been offered a postdoctoral position and the anticipated start date.

    FOCUS: Basic Biomedical Research

    Description: The George and Marie Vergottis Foundation Research Fellowship was established at Harvard Medical School to provide financial assistance for Greek national postdoctoral fellows pursuing basic biomedical research.  The intent of the fellowship is to provide an outstanding training opportunity for postdoctoral fellows with strong affiliations with Greece and Greek institutions.

    Amount of Support: $50,000 over one year with the possibility of a second year of funding. Funds may be used for salary support or materials and supplies for basic biomedical research projects.  Applications for clinical research projects will not be accepted.

    Number of Harvard Nominations: up to 2

    Deadline for Applications: June 10, 2024 (11:30pm)

    2.     Have committed and matching HMS sponsorship.  Research must be performed at a quad based or HMS affiliated hospital faculty member laboratory.

    3.     Must be a Greek national.   
    Note: The intent of the Vergottis Fellowship is to provide an outstanding training opportunity for postdoctoral fellows with recent affiliations with Greece and Greek academic institutions.

    Required materials:

    1. Statement of interest and description of research project (Limit 2 pages. May include an additional page for references and figures).  The statement of interest should provide background information as well as future goals.   The research proposal should be specific and outline a project that would produce tangible results within a 2-year period.   
    2. A brief statement (1-2 paragraphs or ½ page) identifying how in the future you might share the expertise and training gained from the fellowship with students and colleagues in Greece.
    3. A letter of recommendation and commitment from sponsoring HMS faculty member.
    • The Vergottis Postdoctoral Fellowship is not intended to be the sole support for applicants.   Awardees must have matching departmental support to ensure the successful implementation and execution of the proposed research project.  Matching funding for the research project, (i.e., supplies, or salary support would count) should be clearly stated in the letter of recommendation
    • For applicants not already working at HMS, the letter of commitment must state that the applicant has been offered a postdoctoral position and the anticipated start date.
