 HST M.D. Admissions Procedures

The M.D. application deadlines are October 15, 2016 (for AMCAS applications) and October 22, 2016 (secondary applications). Promising applicants are invited to interview in the fall and winter of 2016-17. The interviews will be held on the following Tuesday afternoons: October 18, October 25, November 1, November 15, November 29, December 6, December 20, and January 10. Final decisions will be made by early March 2017.

The HST Admissions Subcommittee recommends a broad undergraduate educational experience. Typically half of those who matriculate majored in biological sciences and half in physical sciences. All admissions requirements for Harvard Medical School must be completed prior to matriculation in the Division. In addition, the HST curriculum requires that students be comfortable with upper-level mathematics (through differential equations and linear algebra), biochemistry and molecular biology. This is usually demonstrated through upper level course work, but other approaches may satisfy these requirements. In addition, one year of calculus-based physics in college is required.

Successful candidates have completed at least 6 months of research, have demonstrated a commitment to serving others, and have evidence of passionate involvement and leadership in extracurricular activities. The HST Admissions Subcommittee particularly values research experience with evidence of independent, intellectual and practical contributions by the student.

To apply, complete the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) application online at:

All applicants will be invited to submit a secondary application to Harvard Medical School when their completed AMCAS application is processed. Secondary applications are due by October 22, 2016.

HST requires a separate essay in the Harvard Medical School secondary application. The purpose of the essay is to explain why the applicant plans a career devoted to medical science, and how HST's curriculum may fit the applicant's career goals.

Students may apply to the HST program or the Pathways program, or to both. Application to both programs in no way prejudices the chance of acceptance to either one. Students may also indicate candidacy for the Medical Scientist Training Program of the M.D./Ph.D. program.
