HMS Wireless

HMS offers two different type of wireless connections, HMS Public and HMS Private. Trying to connect to any web page will display the Wireless Authentication Page.
Members of the HMS Community: Select the drop down box labeled eCommons and enter your eCommons login name and password.
Visitors from other Harvard Schools: Select the appropriate authentication server and enter your user name and password.

HMS Public Wireless Network

This method uses the computer wireless card installed on your laptop to connect to HMS wireless network. The "HMS Public" wireless network is designed for HMS guest users. Any laptops with a wireless card can connect to this network without entering a username or password.

How to Connect

  1. Launch your internet browser
  2. Review the HMS Wireless Network Disclaimer page
  3. Click Accept to get connected.

HMS Private Wireless Network

How to Connect using Mac OS X

  1. Turn your wifi on by clicking on the wifi symbol near the clock on your computer's menu bar and choosing Turn Wi-Fi On
  2. Once you turn on the wireless, the window should populate with the available wireless networks. Choose HMS Private from the list
  3. Once you've chosen the network, a window will pop up requesting your mycourses/ecommons login information. Enter your username and password in the available boxes and click Join. For convenience, you can leave Remember this Network checked off
  4. Once you click join, a box will pop up for you to verify the network's certificate. If you wish you can Show the Certificate, but all that is required here is that you click on Continue
  5. In order to accept this certificate, your computer will require that you enter your Computer Administrator Password

How to Connect using your iPad

  1. On the home screen, go to Settings > WiFi. From the list of available networks, choose HMS Private and click Next.
  2. You will be prompted to authenticate. Enter your eCommons credentials. Then click Join.
  3. You will see a notification and prompt to accept the certificate used to establish the secure HMS Private connection. Click Accept.
  4. Once the connection has been successfully established, the network name will be highlighted and a checkmark will display. You should now be connected to the HMS Private wireless network

Note: If you can't conntect, or you receive an error message, repeat these steps again. Be careful to enter in your password correctly; it is easy to make typos on the iPad keyboard.

How to Connect using Windows 7

  1. Open Start>Control Panel>Network and Sharing Center
  2. Click the link, Manage Wireless Networks in the left column
  3. Click Add in the Manage Wireless Networks That Use (Wireless Network Connection)
  4. Click Manually Create a Network Profile
  5. Enter the text in the following fields:
    • Network name: HMS Private
    • Security Type: WPA2-Enterprise
    • Encryption Type: TKIP
  6. Click Change Connection Settings when at the Successfully Added HMS Private step
  7. Click the tab, Security, in the HMS Private Wireless Network Properties dialog window
  8. Make sure you have the following in the next window:
    • Security Type: WPA2-Enterprise
    • Encryption Type: TKIP
    • Choose a network authentication method: Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)
    • Check Remember my credentials for this connection each time I’m logged on
  9. Click the button: Settings
  10. Check Connect to These Servers:
  11. Enter the following text in the field (including the semi-colon):;
  12. Check off GeoTrust Global CA under Trusted Root Certification Authorities
  13. Click the button: Configure… and uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any). Click OK
  14. Click OK in the Protected EAP Properties dialog box.
  15. Click OK in the HMS Private Wireless Network Properties dialog box
  16. Click Close in the Manually connect to a wireless network dialog box
  17. Click on the wireless icon in the system tray in the lower right corner of your screen. A box will show all of the available wireless networks in the vicinity
  18. Click on HMS Private and then the Connect button. You will then be prompted for your MyCourses credentials
  19. Enter your MyCourses username and case-sensitive password at the Network Authentication prompt

Note: If this doesn’t work, try the following:

  • Username: med\[your MyCourses username]
  • Password: [your MyCourses case-sensitive password]
  • Test by launching a web browser and go to any non-Harvard website
