How do I obtain a copy of CrashPlan?

CrashPlan is available through the HMS Endpoint Services Program at no cost. *

  • For Windows, from the Start menu, launch the LANDesk Management Portal Manager
  • For Macintoshlaunch HMS Self Service for Macintosh from the Applications folder.

Click on the CrashPlan icon to install. Once the installation is complete, launch CrashPlan and enter your eCommons ID to complete the registration.

After enrolling, launch the LANDesk Portal Manager from the Start menu (Windows) or HMS Self Service in the Applications folder (Macintosh). **

* All HMS and HSDM Faculty and Staff are eligible to enroll in the HMS Endpoint Services Program.

** Note that it may take up to 30 minutes for applications to become available after enrollment.

You may also install CrashPlan using the provided installers and instructions.

What are CrashPlan's systems requirements?

CrashPlan PROe requires a minimum of 1 GB memory and 250 MB hard drive space for installation. Complete system requirements for CrashPlan can be found here:

CrashPlan is fully supported on computers running Windows 7 through Windows 10 and Apple computers running Mac OS X 10.9 through 10.12. If an older version of Crashplan was installed on a computer with an older operating system, your computer may continue to back up, but a newer version of CrashPlan will not install or function correctly.

Important: No further accommodations will be made for unsupported operating systems and backups may stop working at any point in the future with little to no warning.

How do I install CrashPlan?

To install CrashPlan on your computer, you will need to download the appropriate installer for your computer, using one of the links provided below. After you've downloaded the installer application, review the instructions for your computer type, to configure CrashPlan for use with the Harvard Medical School CrashPlan PROe server.

How can I make the initial backup as efficient as possible?

The first time the backup is run, it can take a long time to complete. In some cases it could take up to several days to complete, depending on how much data is being backed up and the quality of the internet connection.

Follow the instructions outlined in the CrashPlan PRO Increase Speed of Initial Backup documentation, to make sure your data is backed up quickly, with minimum performance impact.

How do I know CrashPlan is finished installing and backing up?

On a Windows Computer:

  1. Open CrashPlan.
  2. Click on the BackUp tab.
  3. When a backup has been successfully completed, you will see a green circle with a check mark.

On a Macintosh Computer:

  1. Click the CrashPlan icon in the menu bar.
  2. When a backup has been successfully completed, you will see a green circle next to the mybackup.hms.harvard.edu server name.
