Simone de Oliveira with a whiteboard illustration of the Family VanWhat is the most fulfilling part of your role here at HMS?
I’m motivated by our volunteers and by the members of the Greater Boston community who utilize our services on The Family Van mobile clinic. Many of our clients are in tough circumstances and don’t have access to health care resources, but they trust us to provide health information. They look forward to seeing us. They remind me why I am doing this work and inspire me to do my part to help.

What activities or experiences outside of your job inform who you are in your role at HMS?
I am originally from Brazil; I am queer; I am an immigrant; and I am a woman of color. My background helps me put myself in others’ shoes. On The Family Van, I see many people like me come through the door. I empathize with their challenges and use that understanding to do my best to serve their needs.

What is your motto?
“To be a leader is to serve.” When people look up to you, it is your job to serve them — to meet them where they are and to do your best to help them. When I am helping others, I know I am being a good leader.
