Innovation and Entrepreneurship

About HMS

Innovation and Entrepreneurship at HMS

Today’s urgent health challenges demand 21st century solutions: Targeted therapies. Apps that inspire behavior change. Technology to manage big data. Creative ways of healing underserved populations. HMS innovators are poised to discover, design, and build these solutions.

As part of its mission to alleviate human suffering from disease, Harvard Medical School encourages and supports innovation and entrepreneurship by its talented community of students, faculty, postdocs, alumni, and staff. Harvard provides resources—from mentors to technical expertise to funding—to help turn creative ideas for improving health into reality, whether these ideas emerge from our laboratories, classrooms, dormitories, or the clinics of Harvard’s renowned affiliated hospitals. The spirit of innovation infuses the School’s core activities of teaching, research, and patient care.

Spring Biodesign Workshop

The Biodesign process is a proven methodology for innovating in healthcare which is rooted in needs finding, validating needs, and concept creation via brainstorming and prototyping. This hands-on, 10-week course focuses on taking students through the process via lectures and practicals; the resulting skills and experience are essential in identifying needs, assessing opportunities, and creating lasting competitive advantage for creating innovation products and services. Students are presented with unmet clinical needs identified by our partner hospitals, and work to place additional emphasis on important considerations for healthcare IT/digital health needs in addition to medical device/technology. Classes are led by entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, IP attorneys and other experts.

Office Hours We host Harvard faculty, entrepreneurs and investors to meet with students and discuss their experience, answer career questions and hear your pitches.  These are available on a first come, first serve basis.  To sign up for office hours, click here.

Scholars in Medicine The Center for Primary Care is excited to introduce a new Scholars in Medicine opportunity focused on healthcare innovation and entrepreneurship. We welcome students interested in researching business models of healthcare startups, studying the healthcare venture capital process or writing a case study profiling a disruptive technology or healthcare entrepreneur. You will be connected to an industry advisor and if you choose the case writing opportunity, we will match you with a case writing team.  Topics can range from digital health, biotech or device development as well as new care delivery and payment modes.

Workshops and Investor Pitches Experiential learning through workshops on design thinking, entrepreneurs toolkit, building prototypes and more!  We also host a series of pitch opportunities with a community of angel investors and venture capitalists.

Postdoc Entrepreneurship Committee
A key focus of this initiative is leveraging the intellectual resources and experience of HMS researchers and clinicians. Multiple programs, courses, and events are currently being developed or are already offered to the community of Postdocs and PhD/Medical students. In collaboration with the entire Harvard community, including Harvard Business School and the multiple “Life Labs” (e.g., iLab in Allston), Harvard Medical School fosters a spirit of entrepreneurship whereby unique approaches to healthcare challenges are supported by a dedicated infrastructure and cross-disciplinary resources. The school re-envisions the innovation life cycle as deriving from the bottom—up expertise of its constituents. HMS supports venture creation to address the needs of the healthcare ecosystem in which it plays a vital role, through mentorship and a platform to develop ideas into real-world solutions.

For more information on current or upcoming programs, contact the Postdoc Entrepreneurship Committee at asahin1@mgh.harvard.edu or or by visiting this website.
