How about offering an MD/Master's program so that for the 5th year if
research is elected, a student can earn a Master's degree. This was (and I
believe is still offered) at Washington University Medical School.
This is a great suggestion, and coincides exactly with a plan that's currently being developed by the Strategic Advisory Group on Education (SAGE). The SAGE is proposing that HMS develop a "New Pathway Investigator Program" to encourage and support medical student research, and that medical students who spend at least one year involved in research will be eligible for the Masters in Medical Science degree (MMSc). To be awarded the MMSc, these students must also develop a thesis proposal and submit an acceptable Masters thesis, and must also take two semester-length courses at HMS, FAS or HSPH relevant to their field of study. We feel that this degree program would provide greater structure and rigor in medical student research training for students who want to spend more time in research as medical students, but who don't wish to pursue the more prolonged and intensive path leading to the MD-PhD.
