HMS Strategic Planning

NOVEMBER 13, 2008

Message from the Dean

To all HMS Faculty, Staff, and Students:

I am delighted to announce that David E. Golan has been appointed as the first Dean for Graduate Education at Harvard Medical School, effective immediately. The creation of this new position stems from recommendations that emerged from the strategic planning process, along with recognition of the need for better communication, coordination, and partnership among the many different graduate programs at HMS and across Harvard. Reporting to me, the Dean for Graduate Education will work closely with Thomas Michel, Dean for Education, and Jules Dienstag, Dean for Medical Education, to create a new educational environment at HMS that brings together graduate students, medical students, trainees, and faculty in shared education and research activities throughout the broad spectrum of biomedical investigation at Harvard.

As Dean for Graduate Education, David will direct the newly formed Program in Graduate Education, which will bring together leaders of graduate education across Harvard, including graduate program directors, chairs of Quadrangle departments, hospital-based scientists, graduate curriculum fellows, and other leading educators in our community. David Cardozo, the HMS Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, will work closely with David Golan in these efforts. Under David GolanÍs leadership, the HMS Program in Graduate Education will coordinate activities and develop new programs across the University to enhance our graduate studentsÍ engagement in all aspects of biomedical discovery.

David's second major area of responsibility as Dean for Graduate Education will be his continued direction of the Harvard Catalyst Research Education Program, an exciting and highly visible component of the Harvard Catalyst. In this role, he will continue to coordinate the design, development, implementation, and oversight of the master's degree programs at HMS.

I am also pleased to announce that David will serve as Special Advisor to the Dean on global programs at HMS together with his appointment as Dean for Graduate Education. In this role, David will continue his critical contributions to HMS and Harvard University in strategizing and designing the School's global education programs and research partnerships. These programs provide global research and education opportunities for Harvard faculty and students abroad and complementary opportunities for international faculty and students at Harvard.

David has served for many years as a leading scientist and educator at HMS. He is a professor in the HMS Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, where his laboratory applies biophysical and cell-imaging methodologies to the study of membrane-targeted proteins in blood cells and in the vascular endothelium. David is also Professor of Medicine at HMS and a physician in the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he continues to see patients as a practicing hematologist and clinician-teacher.

After earning his AB summa cum laude in chemistry at Harvard College, David received his PhD in molecular biophysics and biochemistry and his MD degree from Yale University, followed by clinical training in internal medicine and in hematology at BWH. For many years, David designed and taught the Pharmacology course for first-year medical students at HMS, and is the principal author of the best-selling textbook Principles of Pharmacology. In addition to many awards and honors for his discoveries in red blood cell biophysics and cellular imaging, including an NIH MERIT Award, David received the Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges in 2005. He is an Associate Director of the Leder Human Biology and Translational Medicine graduate program, and is a founding Scholar of the Academy at Harvard Medical School.

I also wish to warmly thank Tom Roberts, who will be stepping down after many years of service and inspired leadership as the Faculty Dean for Graduate Education in the Division of Medical Sciences (DMS). Tom has made enormous contributions to the growth and vitality of the DMS for more than a dozen years. Tom will be devoting his considerable energy and talent to his laboratory efforts, and will continue his leadership of the Department of Cancer Biology at the DFCI. I owe Tom a tremendous debt of gratitude for his selfless efforts on behalf of the DMS graduate programs, and will always value his wise counsel and thoughtful insights into HMS graduate education.

Please join me in welcoming David Golan to my leadership team in the Dean's office at HMS. His appointment marks another strategic step in strengthening teaching and research at Harvard Medical School and beyond, and in enhancing the experience of all our students.

Jeffrey S. Flier, MD
Dean of the Faculty of Medicine
