Dear Members of the Harvard Medical School Community,
In light of the incident at the New Research Building (NRB), in which six people became ill after consuming coffee containing a chemical we recently learned was sodium azide, we want to take this opportunity to review best practices that will help maintain a safe and secure work environment. For a summary of resources and an advisory of best practices, visit http://hms.harvard.edu/public/community_resources/.
- Community Participation and Responsibility
- Security Measures Prior to August 26, 2009
- Security Enhancements after August 26, 2009
- Food and Beverage Safety Recommendations
- Environmental Health and Safety
- Chemical Safety Policies and Procedures
We also want you to be aware that the Harvard Longwood Campus Lab Safety and Security Task Force formed early this year continues to meet and will be making ongoing recommendations to further enhance HMS security. We will keep you apprised of its efforts.
In addition, our Human Resource (HR) Office is always available to provide individual and community support. Contact your HR consultant directly with any concerns and questions, or contact the main HR office at 617-432-2035. The Wellness Corporation, Harvard University's Employee Assistance Program (EAP), is another valuable resource and can be reached at
