Welcome to the HMS Integrity in Academic Medicine website, which we offer as a resource on our efforts to define and address issues that govern relationships between academic institutions and industry. The integrity of our faculty in the conduct of their clinical, research and teaching missions is of paramount importance, and the challenge posed by financial conflicts of interest (COI) in academic medicine is one we take extremely seriously. We are currently in the process of reviewing and updating the HMS Faculty Policy on Conflicts of Interest and Commitment, which has been in effect with periodic modifications since 1990. Responsible collaborations historically have advanced human health, helping scientists and physicians turn basic discoveries and clinical insights into effective therapies. As the HMS policy states, “With clear guidelines and principles, in conjunction with appropriate mechanisms for supervision and monitoring, cooperation between industry and academic medicine is consistent with the highest traditions of the medical profession and can energize scientific creativity.” As dean of Harvard Medical School, I can assure our community and the public that every effort is being made to protect academic independence and the integrity of the process. We strongly encourage you to send us your comments and reflections on this issue, which is of vital importance to HMS as well as academic institutions throughout the country. Jeffrey S. Flier, MD |
